Harbor Island Sea Turtle Project
Harbor Island is a barrier island in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and is a private residential community located between Charleston and Hilton Head Island. The island has approximately three miles of beach on which Loggerhead Sea Turtles come to nest. The turtle nesting season runs from May through October. Loggerhead Sea Turtles are on the list of "threatened" species in the United States and "endangered" worldwide. They are also the State Reptile for South Carolina.
We have approximately 25 volunteers who participate in the Harbor Island Sea Turtle Project and each morning volunteers go out at sunrise to search the beach for turtle tracks and nests All nests are monitored until they hatch and data is submitted to the SC Department of Natural Resources and SeaTurtle.org.
Harbor Island had been experiencing an increase in nests each season over the last few years, however, the island has had a great deal of erosion over the last two years and the nesting areas are greatly diminished. A female looks for the soft dry sand between the tide line and the dune to build her nest. We have very little of that anymore.
If you are visiting Harbor Island, please join us for a Turtle Talk. The 30 to 60 minute (varies based on the number of questions asked) program is held in the Community Center every Monday at 5:00 P.M. during the nesting season - Memorial Day through Labor Day. We started the "Talks" last year and feel that they were a great success.
The Harbor Island Sea Turtle Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization
